A Network Equipment Provider required a solution to be implemented for a number of its Tier 1 clients in the APAC region.
Performance data needed to be accessed; it had previously been available from its 3G network, but it was now required from its new LTE network. Collecting this data was proving problematic with the new network topology.
The partner (and the CSPs it was serving) had, at the time, been unable to access key information such as performance alarms, customer counters, etc. This came from three network sources:
- In batch mode from 3G network.
- In real-time mode for LTE with RAN data
- In real-time mode for EPC with core network data
The first Use Case of the three to be addressed was Radio Access Network data from the LTE, needed for near real-time KPI Management and real-time performance alarming. A solution was required that involved no waiting period for detecting network and call related issues. This would replace a legacy system that was applying alarming on performance counter values stored in data warehouses. This resulted in at least 30-60 minute delays.
Consolidated LTE Call Trace data and network performance data is collected to produce full Call Summary Logs, Customized Counters and PM data alarms in real-time. Data sources include streaming Cell Trace Recording and Topology files collected via SFTP from OSS-RC. In total, 415 000 call events per second are ingested from 3200 eNodeBs as well as topology files from the EMS and alarm threshold values from PM. The solution runs on 6 blades (HP Bl460c, 2 * quad cores with 64 GB RAM);
two handle collection, forwarding and MediationZone Platform resources. The other four handle processing at a rate of 110 000 events/s per blade. Modular configuration functionality allows the CSPs to directly control both output and content. Output is generated for each feature along with the required threshold alarms. Topology data collected by MediationZone from EMS/OSS systems involves Node ID and Cell ID being translated to network node names.
The carriers can now control QoS (Quality of Service) in real-time to support usage control and bill shock prevention requirements. This is expected to lead to enhanced customer satisfaction. They will also benefit from huge savings from the costs that would have been required for legacy mediation to be adapted to support the new LTE requirements. Additionally, one of the carriers in this case further deployed DigitalRoute’s Usage Management extension.
It enables the carrier to offer various data services that require real-time data processing capability, such as data bucket sharing within group and family and sponsored data. The carrier can now leverage its MediationZone investment to support functions that are normally unsupported by other mediation solutions.
