Buyers and sellers of travel are connected by the company’s next generation marketplace, Travelport+, which simplifies how brands connect, upgrades how travel is sold, and enables modern digital retailing.
Headquartered in the United Kingdom and operating in more than 165 countries around the world, Travelport is focused on driving innovation that simplifies the complex travel ecosystem.
The company’s next-generation platform, Travelport+, is the only modern retailing platform built for travel agencies. Travelport helps people see the world by making it easy for businesses like airlines, hotels, rail and car rental companies to connect with travel agencies and online travel sites through the Travelport+ marketplace so that they can create personalized, seamless experiences for travelers.
Travel agents, travel providers and consumers continually demand a more modern retailing experience for travel. With an estimated 10,000 travel products available in 2024 compared to 500 in 2010, the sheer scale of trip options can overwhelm both travel agents and consumers.
Travelport’s unique ability to capture travel product offerings and trip options from multiple sources, to then curate and present that information in a way that agencies can easily search, shop and compare creates a more seamless selling and servicing experience. With many decades powering the travel industry with its global distribution systems, Travelport’s mission is to reduce the complexities in travel and simplify processes for our customers.
Challenges in short:
Travelport recognized the opportunity to upgrade outdated and complex legacy billing systems to fulfill that customer promise, to reduce the need for manual processing and introduce a standardized and consolidated best in class billing infrastructure.
Travelport wanted to implement a flexible, modern, best-in-class solution that could adapt to changing business needs. Not only would this simplify and automate billing processes, it would also deliver a solution that was easy to maintain and extend.
Travelport sought a best-in-class capability for data normalization, to fully capitalize on the new modern billing platform. This solution required the high level of compliance and resiliency our consumers demanded.
“It’s not every decade that you get to replace and kick a 30 year old system to the curb! The beginning of many more benefits for Travelport through DigitalRoute execution.”
A Scaled Agile Framework approach was put in place to capture requirements and plan the next phase of the project. This was followed with the team gradually replacing functionality and code from the legacy systems with new workflows built on the DigitalRoute platform.
DigitalRoute implemented a data management platform that could reproduce Travelport's existing processes and data flows, as demonstrated in the proof of concept. This included the consolidation of siloed systems into a more unified platform, breaking down the existing silos.
Legacy systems were migrated to a Linux-based architecture using DigitalRoute MediationZone. The platform provided a well documented modern, flexible, and agile infrastructure. It included the ability to compare results to the legacy system via dashboards made available to the Travelport team, which became a key component to facilitate testing.
The initial implementation consisted of processing 49 source files daily with additional files processed at the end of the month. The solution enabled faster and more efficient data processing, completing the daily process in under one hour. Throughout the project, there was a focus on building trust and an effective working relationship between Travelport and DigitalRoute, which was essential to the success of the project.
“This is such a remarkable milestone in Travelport’s history and will play a significant role in enabling our future business capabilities. Thank you everyone for the hard work, innovative mindset and collaborative approach to make today possible. It really was a cross-company initiative.”
The project delivered significant improvements to the Travelport IT infrastructure, resulting in a more efficient, flexible, and secure operating environment. By modernizing legacy systems, the company achieved substantial cost reductions while enhancing its ability to adapt to evolving business needs. The new architecture not only improved data processing capabilities but also prioritized resiliency and security. Additionally, the well-documented solution ensures smooth knowledge transfer to future personnel, while the improved end-user experience adds value to the Travelport service offerings.
Outcome in short:
Cost reduction through IT infrastructure modernization
Enhanced business agility and flexibility
Improved data processing speed and efficiency
Comprehensive documentation for knowledge transfer
Increased system resiliency
Enhanced security architecture
